Rainbow Trout at Tuckahoe

Since 2020 resulted in missing out on a lot of the things I wanted to do thanks to COVID, I’m making 2021 all about getting outside and doing more unorganized activities. 2020 was supposed to be the year I started doing steel challenge and go to GSSF matches, since everything was cancelled and then an ammo shortage, there’s no way I’m going to try either this year. I’m not going to use a few hundred rounds of ammo in a weekend when I can’t easily replace it for a reasonable price.

That’s why this year I am getting into hunting and fishing. I already have posts on my jump into late season furbearer hunting, I’ve talked turkey, and today I’m going to focus on fishing. Specifically fishing for rainbow trout.

The last time I went fishing was 2011/2012, I won a rockfish trip in a charity auction, it’s one of those where you show up and everything is provided. Excluding that I have not gone fishing in at least 20 years. I don’t know why none of my family members ever invited me hunting or fishing. My parents were divorced and my dad had no interest in either activity, which translated into me having no interest since I had no one to take me. With the way the world is today I want to be able to put food on the table in the event there is another shutdown, food shortages, and just to save some money.

So I’m actively picking out equipment with the help of a high school friend. I’m trying to stay under $200 for everything, but I don’t know if that will be possible. I just don’t want to spend $600-$700 on gear and end up hating it. If I can stay under $200 I’ll probably buy my brother gear too so I can drag him along.

Like with my turkey and deer plans, I plan to fish at Tuckahoe State Park since its close, has trout, and isn’t closed on the days they stock trout. There’s a five trout limit, so if my brother comes along and we get our limit that’s a nice meal and a couple of fish each for the freezer. I’ll need to buy a vacuum sealer, but I need to do that anyway since I buy some meats like chicken in bulk when possible and freezing all of that in freezer bags somehow still get’s freezer burned after a while.
